Delivery Journal

DISCLAIMER: I'm dead tired, so blame fatigue for any misspellings, run-on or fragmented sentences, or incoherence in the posts that I'll be writing the next couple of days :).

That being said...

Judy's water broke about 2:00 pm Wednesday, May 21. We rushed home, packed our bags, and arrived at Desert Samaritan about 3:00 pm. We were admitted after one of the nurses verified that Judy's water had indeed broken.

It was smooth sailing until about 8:45 pm when labor pains got a little tougher. The pain increased exponentially over the next couple of hours. Judy was only about 3 cm dialated when our nurse told us that we could expect to achieve about 1 cm dialation per hour after we hit 5 cm. But, but, ... we still had 2 more to go to even get to 5!!! Judy was a trooper and held out a while longer before finally deciding on the epidural. I can't say it enough what a trooper Judy was! I love you, babe and you were awesome! It's hard to see someone you love in that much pain, and she held out a long time.

We slept on and off throughout the night. About 5:30am she was almost fully dialated. The next several hours became sort of scary as Kayla's heartbeat pattern showed a lot of what the nurse referred to as "variability" as evidenced by one of the monitors hooked up to Judy's stomach. Later, Judy developed a temperature. Judy wasn't making any progress toward dialating any further, so the nurse wanted to continue administering the drugs to help with the contractions. However, she believed that it was these very drugs that were at least in part at fault for Kayla's erratic heartbeat as the contractions the drugs produced were so stressful and traumatic for Kayla. Talk about your catch-22's. Nurse Carol decided to take Judy off the drugs which helped Kayla out a bunch.

Judy's doctor showed up about 10 am. Judy had not made any progress in 4.5 hours, so he recommended cesarean. His reasoning about the lack of progress in dilation coupled with Judy's fever made complete sense to us, so we agreed without hesitation.

Not too long after that our Kayla was born. She was born with a head full of hair and the most oblong head you could imagine! And you know what? She's gorgeous...oblong head and all :). Apparently Kayla had been making her way down the birth canal and got stuck, part due to Judy not being completely dialated and part due to the umbilical cord being wrapped twice around Kayla! The umbilical cord issue may also be to blame for Kayla's heart patterns.

Anyway, she's doing well now, praise God.

Since each person, as an individual, is the not-being of the other, it is never possible to eliminate non-understanding completely.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Christianity taught that men ought to be as chaste as pagans thought honest women ought to be. The contraceptive morality teaches that women need to be as little chaste as pagans thought men need be.

Certainly it is wrong to be cruel to animals and the destruction of a whole species can be a great evil. The capacity for feelings of pleasure and pain and for the form of life of which animals are capable clearly impose duties of compassion and humanity in their case.

The difference between man and woman is like that between animals and plants. Men correspond to animals, while women correspond to plants because their development is more placid and the principle that underlies it is the rather vague unity of feeling.

I pay very little regard... to what any young person says on the subject of marriage. If they profess a disinclination for it, I only set it down that they have not yet seen the right person.

Sometimes when you look back on a situation, you realize it wasn`t all you thought it was. A beautiful girl walked into your life. You fell in love. Or did you? Maybe it was only a childish infatuation, or maybe just a brief moment of vanity.

How good one feels when one is full - how satisfied with ourselves and with the world! People who have tried it, tell me that a clear conscience makes you very happy and contented. But a full stomach does the business quite as well, and is cheaper, and more easily obtained. One feels so forgiving and generous after a substantial and well-digested meal - so noble-minded, so kindly-hearted.

The advice to limit our concerns might go along with the happy belief in an invisible hand or mechanism by which a number of independent agents, each acting on their own narrow concerns, in fact maximize the social good. This mechanism is the great buttress to free markets and laissez-faire capitalism. Unfortunately, there are situations in which instead of an invisible hand there is an invisible boot, ensuring that the same agents do worse than they would under a more generous regime of concern for each other.
